Weiser City Police and Washington County Sheriff's Office lookout for drunk drivers
WEISER, Idaho (CBS2) — Officers from the Weiser City Police and deputies from the Washington County Sheriff's Office are joining law enforcement agencies across Idaho to keep drunk drivers off the road.
Beginning Friday, Aug. 19 through Sep. 5, officers will dedicate patrols to look for drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
"From families taking their vacation to summer construction, there is a lot that happens on our roads in the summer," said Lt. Troy Krahn. "Impaired drivers put everyone else at risk when they choose to get behind the wheel."
This effort comes near the end of the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer, where there is typically an increase in fatal crashes. So far, at least 72 people have been killed in crashes this summer.
According to the Idaho Transportation Department's Office of Highway Safety, nearly 40 percent of fatal crashes in Idaho involve some form of driver impairment.
"This is a problem that affects all of us. It's going to take all of us working together to stop impaired driving," Chief Deputy Brady Johnson said.
