Teens OK to tan after committee nixes bill
BOISE, Idaho (AP) A Senate committee has fried an attempt to restrict tanning bed use for Idaho youths.The Senate Health and Welfare Committee voted 5-3 Thursday to kill the plan, which would bar anyone under 15 from using tanning salons and require parental consent for teens between ages 16 and 18.
The bill, which had wide support from medical professionals and organizations, passed the House after a string of amendments.
Parma Sen. Melinda Smyser opposed the bill, saying parents should regulate their children's behavior not the government.
Industry representatives cast doubt on the dangers of indoor tanning and called the plan a government overreach.
Bill sponsor and House Minority Leader John Rusche said he was disappointed lawmakers didn't opt in favor of cancer protection, calling the connection to tanning clear.
